Halloween Homemade Pop Tarts (Ghost + Pumpkin Edition)
Ingredients
For the pastry:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 1 large egg
- 2–3 tbsp cold milk
For the filling (choose your vibe):
- ½ cup fruit jam (strawberry or raspberry for a “bloody” Halloween look)
- OR ½ cup Nutella or chocolate spread
- OR pumpkin butter if you’re leaning festive
For the icing + decorations:
- 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
- 2–3 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Food coloring gels (orange, black, white)
- Optional: mini chocolate chips for eyes
Directions
- Make the pastry
In a food processor (or by hand), pulse flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in cold butter until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Add egg + milk just until dough comes together. Split in half, wrap, and chill 30 minutes. - Roll and cut
Roll out dough on a floured surface to about ⅛” thick. Cut into rectangles (about 3×4″). You’ll need pairs—one for the bottom, one for the top. - Assemble
Place bottoms on a parchment-lined sheet. Add a spoonful of filling in the center, leaving edges clear. Brush edges with beaten egg or milk. Place a second rectangle on top, press edges with a fork to seal. - Bake
Chill assembled pop tarts in the fridge 15 minutes (helps keep shape). Bake at 375°F for 20–25 minutes until golden. Cool completely before icing. - Decorate spooky-style
Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla into a smooth icing. Divide into bowls, tint with food coloring (orange for pumpkin, leave some white for ghosts, black for eyes and mouths). Spread or pipe shapes—don’t stress about “perfect,” homemade charm is the goal.- If you are looking for good molds (cookie cutters of ghost/pumpkins) they have a large selections on amazon (of course) if you use our link we get credit, thanks. Tips
- If you don’t want to make dough, you can totally cheat with store-bought refrigerated pie crust. It’s thinner but still works.
- For a richer pastry, brush tops with milk before baking.
- Kids love helping with the icing—ghost blobs and crooked pumpkin faces are basically the whole vibe.
- Let the icing set at least 30 minutes before stacking or serving.
